How To Find Your Unique Edge

Hi Reader

“Who am I to do this?”

Maybe you’ve felt this. You’ve got the big vision for the change you want to make, the next stage you want to build. But as you picture it, you feel that hesitation. You know you’re capable and experienced, yet there’s that subtle question of “Why you?”. What makes this yours to lead?

The problem is this: the default way we think about our value often pulls us towards the generic – how we fit a pattern, how we’re ‘just like’ others – rather than what makes us distinct.

Generic Thinking

When you think about your unique value, what comes to mind?

Most of us start with the big, tidy labels – the roles we’ve held, the sectors we’ve worked in, the skills or qualifications we’re known for. They make sense on a CV, but they miss a subtler, deeper story.

Because while those things describe where we’ve been and what we’ve done, they overlook something important. They miss how our experiences shape how we see the world – how we see our clients’ challenges and opportunities.

And it’s why ‘find your strengths’ advice rarely gets you very far. It can be helpful as a start, but if millions of people share the same strengths, what does that really tell you?

Understanding your unique edge doesn’t sit inside those big blocks. They’re clues, but not the answer. There’s something deeper.

Distinctive Intersections

Your uniqueness lives in the combination – the intersections where your experiences, perspectives and principles overlap.

Those intersections are powerful because they shape how you see the world. Even two people who’ve had seemingly similar careers will bring different framings, values, and motivations. Family, culture, purpose, and personal history all add their own layers of perspective. No one else has lived quite like you.

It’s these intersections that create our distinct way of thinking, leading, and solving problems:

  • The teacher turned trainer then marketer – who knows how to really capture and hold attention, then use it to support change.
  • The marketing specialist who’s worked both agency and client side – understanding the creative ambition and the commercial reality to guide their clients.
  • The strategist who bridges coaching, delivery, customer experience, and productivity – helping leaders turn great ideas into real results. (Yep, that's based on me.)

These are simple examples, but the real ones are much more nuanced.

These intersections build up over time. Because that way of seeing the world is natural to us, we stop noticing. Even when others spot it – when they compliment us for something we take for granted – we don’t quite see that uniqueness in the same way. We sense it’s there, but we can’t name it.

And that lack of true awareness means we underplay it. We explain ourselves in safe, familiar terms. Or maybe even generic ones. We might not fully appreciate that difference, so we don’t lean into it, strengthen it, or use it intentionally.

When It Comes Into Focus

It’s fascinating when I work with clients to uncover these intersections. They start to see how their experience connects. They feel the patterns that run through their story. Together, we join the dots to reveal a distinct, powerful thread.

That realisation often brings an immediate confidence boost because it creates a sense of inner connectedness. Then it helps them talk with precision about the difference they make to their peers and their clients. It can even reshape the path they take next, leaning more into the spaces where they can have the biggest impact.

Their self-leadership sharpens. Their strategy gains depth. They understand why they’re uniquely placed to create the change they want to lead.

Not because nobody else could ever do it – but because nobody else would do it quite like they can.

Find Your Unique Edge

Your uniqueness isn’t found in your titles or credentials. It’s shaped by the intersections that define how you think, decide, and create value.

Understanding those intersections doesn’t just build confidence – it gives you direction. It’s what allows you to lead, plan, and act with clarity.

So ask yourself:

Where are you underplaying what makes you distinct? And what could change if you started leading from it?

If this resonates and you’d like help uncovering what makes you and your approach distinct – and how to use that clarity to shape strategy, focus and impact – I’ve opened a handful of one-off strategy sessions this month.

We’ll get clear on your vision, your unique edge, and the next steps to put it into action.

It starts with a free, no-pressure 30-minute call to explore what would be most helpful. 👉 Book yours here.
