Are You Underestimating Your Impact?
Time to read: 3 minutes
Hi Reader
We often don't fully grasp the true extent of our impact. But your impact reaches further than you realise. Are you underestimating yours?
When you're growing a small business or leading in a corporate role, the day-to-day challenges can shrink your focus to immediate fires and metrics. But there's a deeper ripple effect happening. One that arises through your purposeful growth. And it deserves your attention because it's where your true fulfilment and long-term success actually live.
How Far Does Your Impact Travel?
We often talk about our "sphere of influence" – what we can control versus what we can't. But have you considered your "sphere of impact"? How far do the effects of your purposeful actions travel?
Your impact starts with you but doesn't end there. It creates concentric circles of influence:
The inner circle: You
Purposeful growth transforms how you show up each day. When you're aligned with your purpose and direction, you make decisions more confidently. This clarity creates energy that fuels consistent action instead of scattered efforts.
The immediate circle: Those around you
This ripple reaches your family, friends and close colleagues. The more purposefully aligned you are, the more they experience a version of you that's centred, less reactive, and more intentional in your interactions.
Your clients and customers
They don't just receive your products or services – they're influenced by your purposeful approach and clarity. Your alignment enhances their experience of working with you, which directly impacts their ability to achieve their own goals.
The extended ripple
This is where it gets really interesting. Those you directly impact go on to influence others. Your client who achieved better results because of your purposeful approach? They'll impact their own clients more positively. Your more meaningful contribution creates a compound effect that reaches people you'll never even meet.
I experienced this the other week. Someone I'd never met messaged me saying they'd been following my LinkedIn posts for months. They shared that one of my recent posts had resonated so deeply that it helped them reframe their thinking about an important challenge. A small but important ripple of impact I never would have known about if they hadn't reached out. These invisible ripples are happening all around us.
Aligning Impact with Purpose
Impact isn't just something that happens through your work – it's the realisation of your deeper purpose. Without this alignment, you might experience a nagging sense of disconnect, the frustration of work that feels hollow, or the anxiety of success that somehow doesn't satisfy.
So instead of leaving your impact to chance, you need a clear impact vision to be intentional about it:
- Define your vision. In my Ambition Accelerator programme, we work to articulate exactly what difference you want to make and why it matters – to you and others. This creates a powerful filter for your decisions and actions.
- Map this vision across your circles of influence. How will achieving your vision transform you? Your closest relationships? Your clients? The wider community?
- Notice the disconnect between your vision and your current actions. We all have blind spots where our behaviours don't fully align with our deeper purpose.
- Then take intentional action to close those gaps and better align your actions to your vision.

Amplifying Your Actions
With a clear impact vision, you can be far more intentional about the actions that amplify what matters most:
- Set goals that are intrinsically linked to the impact you want to make.
- Apply your unique combination of strengths in the most intentional and impactful way.
- Build a powerful support team to bolster both you and your impact.
- Create deliberate practices that reinforce your most valued impacts daily, supported by systems that make your most important contributions consistent and scalable.
- Get far more specific when communicating the purpose behind your work.
- Then use feedback to understand how your impact is actually landing, rather than assuming.
When you understand the ripple effects of your actions, you realise that purposeful growth creates waves that travel much further than you can immediately see. This perspective transforms how you view your day-to-day work – from overwhelming tasks to purposeful contributions that matter.
What's Your Next Step?
Your purposeful impact matters far more than you might think. By getting intentional about it, you'll not only build a more fulfilling business but also create positive changes that extend far beyond your immediate reach.
So let me ask you:
