Connecting The Two Halves of Strategy

Hi Reader

Most business owners would say they have a strategy. But look closer, and you'll often find there's only half of one – or one side that's dominating.

Maybe you’re full of big ideas that don’t feel like they’re going anywhere. Or perhaps you’re busy but not getting the results – or even sure what signs to watch for.

Those signals and others are a clear indicator your full strategy isn't pulling its weight.

All vision, no action

At it's core, strategy has two parts:

  • A vision: where you’re heading and why it matters.
  • A roadmap: your best current view of how you’ll get there.

If the vision is dominating, you’re great at imagining what could be. You care about purpose, direction, and ambition. But weeks pass, and you’re still talking about ideas, not action.

You and the team might feel motivated, but unsure what to do next. Interesting new projects get kicked off, but without clear priorities and connection, so what starts as inspiring becomes another burden.

It’s not that the vision is wrong. It's just not connected to a realistic way to execute.

But when all those great ideas meet the structure they need, the energy turns into traction. You see visible progress and focus.

A plan without a destination

At the other end of the scale, you’re brilliant at execution. Tasks get done. Things run smoothly. But after a while, you wonder where it's really all heading.

Time feels productive, but more like a treadmill than a path to growth. You’re working hard, but not sure it still adds up to what you wanted to build. And if there is a vision, the daily work and the destination feel miles apart.

But reconnect that ability to execute with an inspiring vision, and the activity gains meaning. You and the team remember why the work matters. And each decision and action starts to feel part of something bigger.

Why this happens

In larger firms, the balance often sits across multiple roles – a CEO shaping the vision, a COO running delivery - not to mention a board and leadership support all round.

But for many director-owners of smaller businesses, it’s all you. You’re the one setting the direction and planning the detail. You might be doing a fair chunk of the work too, depending on your size.

That makes it easy for one side to dominate, depending on where you're strongest. When you’re moving fast, you don’t always notice the drift until results plateau or motivation drops.

When you find the awareness and space to reconnect both halves, you create the clarity you've been missing. And your strategy becomes a powerful tool for growth and impact.

How to make the connection

This is exactly what my one-off strategy sessions are designed for. Reflective but practical – a structured space to get everything out of your head and joined up on the page.

We start with a focused pre-exercise to frame your thinking. Then spend 90 minutes aligning your vision and roadmap, filling in the gaps, defining clear priorities, and identifying what can wait.

You’ll leave with practical next steps, renewed clarity, and a plan that connects where you’re going with how you’ll get there. Plus we’ll have a short follow-up to keep momentum moving.

Get started with a free, no-pressure 30-minute call to explore what would be most helpful. 👉 Book yours here.

So if your strategy is feeling disconnected, ask yourself:

Which half of your strategy needs your attention right now? And what action will you to take to fix that?

And that’s just the beginning. Because strategy doesn’t end when the vision's sharp and the plan’s in place. The progress comes from ongoing execution, feedback and refinement.

Stay ambitious.
